I got to check in with multi-talented Voice Over artist, Neil Wilson, on hi studio setup.  Neil is heard on radio, tv, in promos, imaging and commercials and I recommend you hit up his website to hear what he does. For now I got the inside dirt on his NEW studio BUILD.  Yep, he got to build it from scratch.  He talks about why he went with a booth over and entire treated room.  He also included blueprints!  Enjoy this inside look and thanks to Neil for contributing!

My wife and I recently built a new home so I had the opportunity to custom build my room from the ground up.  I spent some time consulting with George Whittam and basically had two options for the design – booth or room.  The difference is a double walled room (a room inside a room) or a booth.  I opted for the booth for a couple reasons.  1 – It appraises as a 4th bedroom since it’s technically a giant closet and thus helps resale value down the road.  And 2 – I could isolate all the noisy computer equipment outside the booth and make it as simple as monitor and mics.
You’ll see below that my booth started as a completely square room.  On the blueprint it had a window over looking my producers station.  However, during the construction process we changed it to a diamond shape and removed the window.  No wall in the room is the same length.  Perfect for any iso-booth.  Also, it opened up my room as a whole.   The booth is studded, wired, includes a PVC pipe in the wall for future wiring, insulated and double drywalled.  It’s a super quiet room.  It also includes an exterior grade door to insure the room is completely sealed (and adds the windows I wanted).  Additionally, I made sure there was an A/C drop in there.  For the A/C drop we put a vein in the duct which is running into the room.  This allows the air to FALL into the room and removes any sort of fan noise or forced air sound you may typically hear in say your bedroom.
On the wall are ATS Acoustic panels.  I wrapped them in a microfiber fabric.  They certainly look good and help kill tons of reverb and room noise.  When I last checked the noise floor on my booth is -70db.
As far as my producers desk, processing and such.  For my 416 mic I use an Empirical Labs ELI (which Mark Pineri and Jeff Berlin turned me on to) and my B.L.U.E. Bluebird (which I rarely use) I run through my PreSonus Eureka.  The other box you see is a FM tuner.  My computer is a studded out Mac Mini and the Mackie ONYX 820-i acts as my sound card and input.
